Basque Country, Landes and Périgord

Map Aquitaine trip

The south-western coast of France has been the place where I've spent the biggest part of my holidays as a kid. It was now time to go back! End of August-beginning of September is a good time, holidays are done for most of the people in France but still the weather is good and the ocean warm enough (even more this year 2016, when the summer has continued until late September!).

Going from Asturias in Spain to Savoie in France passing by San Sebastian, Hendaye, Anglet, Hossegor, Biscarrosse, Arcachon and the Périgord was the program of this 10 days road trip. And a really small tent has been our house all along the journey.

The good side of camping at this time of the year is that you can pay around 20-25€ per night for 2 in good 4-5 stars campings (16-20€ in the Périgord), have access to activities and a big swimming pool quite empty of people in case the ocean is not so good.

Before reaching France, there is the Spanish Basque Country. Laredo was our first stop, and first bath. Then we headed directly to Hendaye after getting the windshield cracked... But came back to San Sebastian for a day of visit. One advice there: don't get stolen with the famous "Pintxos"!

St Jean de Luz, Biarritz, Anglet are all about harbors, beaches and surf. More inland, typical villages like Ainhoa and Espelette (famous for its peppers) are worth a visit. You can also go up the Rhune mountain walking or with a small train on a clear day (apparently the view over the coast is breathtaking).

Tall pines forests (perfect for a bike tour), amazingly long beaches with soft sand, more surfing but also lakes with calm waters. The Landes offer a lot for every age.

Oh Arcachon, what a beautiful place. Oysters, harbors, birds, nature, small villages, that's what you'll find going around the Bassin d'Arcachon. You can also take a boat to discover it from inside. But for sure stop in Oysters harbors, discover the charming village of L'Herbe and end up in Cap Ferret.

Take a tour along the Dordogne river, by car, on a canoe or inside the typical "Gabardes". Discover the troglodytic houses, the castles, the caves and eat foie gras. You should definitely stop in Sarlat, La Roque Gageac, Beynac, Les Eyzies, Tursac, Padirac...
